Well to be fair there isn't really a goal to win in survival games. Why would I spend so much effort (and in many cases incredible talent) figuring out how to reach the end credits without actually playing the game? One might argue it is about the journey (learning the exploit) and not about the destination (getting those sweet end credits in 17 seconds), but I guess I just have different ideas on what constitutes a journey. This is when I finally realized I would never be one of those people. I get it, some people are into any% speedruns and love finding new level skips the game designers included something for everyone. These things were quite literally impossible without glitching through walls and such. Then it had 'bonus' achievements with ridiculous goals. It had achievements for obvious stuff like a short completion time and picking up the bare minimum number of items. There was a fun little game on xbox360, Shadow Complex, that slapped an Orson Scott Card paintjob on the tried and true metroidvania. Stronghold Crusader is my top recommendation for old RTS games and definitely a game for very patient gamers.ĭefinitely. Don't bother with the Stronghold Crusader Extreme stuff, the base game is where its at. Stronghold Crusader is also just 8€ on steam, so probably much cheaper elsewhere. Learning this game and getting through the campaign will take a long time. If you don't want to play multiplayer, there is a very good campaign that has you play against AI on various maps in various combinations. There are third party programs that you can use to play this game online even today, so if you have a group of friends you can play with or against them, too. If you are even remotely interested in an RTS game where you collect resources, build your castle, build units and ultimately defeat your enemy in whatever way you choose, this game is definitely worth a look. ![]() I still find myself going back to it because of its simplicity, atmosphere and character.
